That is blatantly faluse information that is so easy to disprove it's a wonder why you even posted it.

It's a WELL KNOWN FACT even some of the games you mention had MILLIONS of people upon release.  They where NOT QUALITY games thus their numbers dwindled.  BDO falls into the same category.

If BDO had not released so many greedy mechanics and poor content is simply would have MILLIONS of active players.  We know for FACT at every single major incident BDO lost a large portion of players.  We also know how trends work, social media, and reputation.

We also KNOW that WOW maintained MILLIONS of SUBSCRIBED players for over a DECADE.

And then you come along saying why do people expect this?

these are opinions, not facts, with the exception of the WOW comment.

Black Desert Population is pretty normal compared to the other Big Mmorpgs atm. Its def not impressive (never was) thou its not bad. think BDO has around 1M active accounts atm, Ffxiv has 1.7M active accounts atm. Numbers are always changing ofc. Make of that what you will.

Real issue atm is the genre as a whole. Mmorpgs in general are dying right now. Theres nothing really coming out or going on thats making mmorpg gamers going "wow"  ...   If you know you know.

I have been playing games online for 18 years and not just a few and not just mmorpg's.

When I log in and play BDO I think to myself " I really love this game "

There is no shortage of players in this game by any means. No shortage of things to do.

I have never seen a game forum that didn't have naysayers as well, they are in every game.

I came back to the game a month ago to played the new class an enjoyed it. But after leveling the new class to 62 I lost all encouragment to play the game again, I tried joining a NW guild an was told my 647 GS was too low to partake in PVP, so I just left. May come back when the new classes awakening is released, but I doubt I'll stay, endless grind with zero enjoyment + not being able to PVP because you need almost 700 GS to be compeititive it seems = pass for me. I'll stick with V rising.

BDO is a niche game.

But I don't think the population is truly in any steep decline. It's always been kinda small...

https://steamdb.info/app/582660/graphs/

looking at the steam population overtime, as just one indicator - it's been higher, it's been lower. 16k 24 hour peak, is not too different than most random days throughout the past 5 years anyway. The ultimate peak at 60k players wasn't even Steam launch, that was 2019 events - and then of course the covid pandemic population swell in 2020-2021, but the current population, again, is not like it's significantly lower than usual.

Another indicator I like to consider, that isn't a very great indicator but still kind of neat to see, is reddit activity. ESO, Guild Wars 2, and BDO all have pretty similar new post frequency. Their subreddits get in my opinion similar traffic. Sure they are a fraction of what FFXIV & WoW get, but using reddit discussion volume as an indicator, if you think BDO is unpopular then just bear in mind it's not really any different than ESO and GW2, too.  Really, I think MMOs in general are pretty unpopular compared to the truly popular titles today. But seeing the small amount of online discussion in big titles like BDO/ESO/GW2, while also knowing that these games are healthily living, reminds me that a community doesn't need to be totally massive for an MMO to still be doing fine.

Lastly, a point I want to make -- the MMO community spent the years between 2006 and 2015 or so obsessed with the idea of the 'WoW-killer" the big game that would be most popular. I think that time and those ideas has shaped our perceptions of what qualifies a game to be called successful or dying. An MMO doesn't have to have 1 million active players to justify its existence. You can have a very small game that lives for a very long time. As long as you can do the content of the game, share your progress with a community, and do all the stuff the game is supposed to do, and your players keep logging back in, then the population is fine. The "death spiral" of a small or dwindling population is not necessarily as doom & gloom as it might seem at first glance. The death spiral is true of games where you rush new content, beat it, and then log off til new content releases again. But it does not necessarily hold true to all games that don't have that same kind of loop.

Yeah the game is declining, but it's a singleplayer game anyway, so?
