i think yes, it would be weird for him to start as all other classes , from watching his trailer in youtube, he shouldnt be effected by dark spirit, the dark spirit shouldnt be the enhancment pal for him, its should be another thing, i hate how pearl abyss being lazy and not care about their costumer expeience only care about money, the gave is out for many years now ITS TIME for the lazy dev to make new main story

Idk if they can get rid of the black spirit for sage,its just an integral part of the gameplay loop. Maybe a new skin or they will come with an explanation for him to have it.

Now,a new story is pretty much needed. If he didnt make a deal with the bs he has all his memories,its unlikely he would have accompanied Illerza and to top it all would be hillarious to Edan to try to explain to sage who the ancients were lmao

FWIW, I think all classes should get their own unique main story with completely different quests in completely different regions.  I would even like to see them remaster the main questline for old classes.

Although I know that could never happen especially with the 1 new class per season quota they're trying to attain.

What would be fun is if they hired some GOOD writers and made a great main story that you want to do and enjoy. Only reason to do it now is does free inventory slots you get doing it.  Or they could go the dark souls rout have no story and just have lore explained with items.
