The Magnus is a TERRIBLE implementation of "Fast Travel".

so loading screens is your solution for balance?

if devs dont want us to fast travel - fine, just don't tell us that we have fast travel when we don't.

We have fast travel -- the lore friendly way. They didn't want to include it and refused for many years but decided to do it because the world was about to expand across the sea in an already very large world. They never said you could use it as instant travel, it's fast travel, meaning you quickly go from one destination to another. But you have to decide on whether or not it's the best choice. You have to choose. This is fine because of the kind of game this is. What would be the point of getting a T9 or T10 mount if you could just instantly go anywhere? What about ships? What would be the point of those?

Loading screens are unfortunate but you have to remember that this game is pretty old already. It released in 2016 and probably took about 3-4 years to develop. It won't have the newest tech you can find in a game released today. The thing that bothers me a lot about a modern MMORPG is that everything surrounds instant gratification. BDO doesn't have that. In fact, it has instant ramafication when you fail your enhancement and makes me angry. But, it's these things that make me excited when I finally get that PEN or reach my destination. It's just that kind of game.

sometimes you need to look at games and think about what they're supposed to be - fun.

are you saying you have fun going through those wells and enjoy those multiple loading screens?

are you thinking "YEA that made my t10 and my carrack well worth getting"?

sounds unlikely...

people can resurrect themselves with cash shop items, map, compass teleport, escape escape, who cares about if someone doesn't want to ride around all day, you'd still be free to enjoy it when you want.

Except that we have fast travel, whatever you're thinking. If it can help you travel across the whole continent in some minutes, that's fast.

But for sure, it is not like some other games in which you can jump from one side of the map to the other one every 10 seconds. However, such a system is not mandatory.

BDO has fast travel... In its own way.

For example, BDO also has dungeons... In its own way.

In short, BDO is getting to do things in its own way. Crazy, right?

Okay, I will give my opinion in the form of both a developer (I don't work for PA) and as a consumer.

The transitions between the player and the well and then again to the other side of where the player designates themselves to is well made. There is a distinct animation sequence that makes the entire montage feel more immersive. The technology behind the Magnus could have perhaps operated a little differently as the Magnus does not have many assets. However, this means that the Magnus would require to be always available (streamed in) whenever the player is near a Well. Unfortunately, wells are typically found near towns and the overhead of said assets may have been too great for the memory budget.

But because they couldn't stream in the magnus like this, they opted for loading its own map. This perhaps was also considered for future expansions as well, for all we know, the magnus might even grow into a big world or perhaps become a corrupted parallel world kind of like the demon world in Ultima online, we don't know this yet.

Even without speculations, having to take the time to go through a well, find the location where you want to teleport and then teleport in itself is an immersive experience and to me it feels more like a living game than just opening a menu and teleporting. Some people may not enjoy this and want to immediately teleport from a menu. This is fine and understandable. But the transition between the main world and the magnus and back again are pretty seamless. Instead of watching a loading screen, we see the player falling, this is typically done so that the player feels less stressed and bored especially since they give you the ability to move the camera around. You can see this sytem employed in various other games and this is a good strategy.

Now you ask, does this system make me happy? Does it feel fun when I use it? That really depends. It's not fun when the game crashes. It's not fun when I have to spend 12mil silver to reach my destination when I have almost no silver because I just spent it all on the central market. But, it's these things that make me think if using it is worth the money or if I should just zoom there with my horse. It gives another depth of thought to the game. I will always agree with you that the crashing part is absolutely not good and after so many years it makes me wonder still, why does it crash? I don't know... I'm curious to the point where I wish I could look at their code. I know that this is a gold sink and the magnus does not reduce the value of horses, ships etc... That's good because I was worried about that before.

There are things in this game that do frustrate me. I don't think the game has made great choices at times and I've been pretty vocal about that in the past. But I try to be honest so that BDO can grow and become a better game. I don't like instant gratification. Even though my time may be limited, I consider it as part of the experience and it makes whatever I aim for even more rewarding. I spent a lot of time leveling my characters, getting the gear, getting my carrack, etc... But at least this is a game where progression tends to not get erased every 3 months like other MMOs.

I have not done the Magnus, but I can fast travel just fine without it.  Ever since I was told about the 30 million silver race horse at the Stonetail ranch, I use them over all other horses.  The race horse can make it from east to west in roughly 8 minutes. Although that drifting is a bit tricky here and there.  The only time I travel by horse is nearby locations.   Jumping in out of wells, means you still need to go to a location and then perform more action to jump out the other end.

FFXI had teleports implemented in a much better way. Grind out your own BLM as the cost and done. Or, find a BLM, negotiate a price, and done. Convenient and balanced telports fitting perfectly into the lore and gameworld. Enhances the experience while providing convenience and player interaction. People put dozens of hours into a BLM just to have their own teleports. Teleport from anywhere, but only to central regional locations. The "from anywhere" is important - anyone implementing "fast travel" without that, is being a dick to their players and they know it. They may have a reason, but it never justifies the worse experience for most players.

BDO has a vision - it's just too bad it is from the one eyed man in the land of the blind.

I only use it for Loml travels. Other than that, I use my crotch rocket. I might use it more if it wasn't so buggy.

If you don't like the Magnus, just don't do the Magnus.  I have used it to unlock the free storage transfer.  Beyond that, it isn't my ideal of "fast travel" for silver.  I still wait an hour to transport characters, while I play on another one.   The original Guild Wars allowed free map travel, once you unlocked any city or village with a visit.  When you first had to traverse that path the world seemed huge.  After you had the cities explored and started blinking around the map, it no longer seemed as epic.  Fast travel can make a virtual world seem very small.  Magnus as much as you care to do.

It takes 15 minutes now, so not even an hour.  In fact if you are not tagged, it is faster to transport a character and do something on an alt for 10 minutes, because you are almost gauranteed to crash if you use the Magnus.

Still a few crashes, but most have already been fix. I haven't crash in a very long time traveling through Magnus.

The fast travel itself is perfecly fine as it is. I can confirm that Valencia to loml is fast using it. It's quite relevant for very long distances but still have you travel the world for short to medium distances. No one ever said it was going to be instant travel between cities or from anywhere. This would be terrible as it would only help in making the world irrelevant.
