It surprises me in this game that some sort of wharf manager interaction doesn't occur when on a boat at the dock. The initial interaction could be very like the barter interface, and go from there.
From the boat: Dock (similar to barter's "Anchor") -> Load / Repair / Supply / Disembark (relocate to wharf manager) / Sailors / etc.
And from the dock, include an "Embark" option (what right clicking the boat icon does, basically).

would also be great to have more power of persuasion, since you can trade way more at one time it should only make sense that you have more than 1 mio per barter round. You are really bound to only a handful of trades if not....
