Why was the performance optimisation removed from the options? the one which allowed the game to use more memory to run smoother. I was wondering why it felt so choppy lately.

Hmm.... Sounds familiar but wasn't it the Low-Power option found at the bottom of Display Quality?

The option was removed because PA made it permanently enabled, there shouldn't be an option that just makes the game performance worse if not enabled.
So any performance change you experience has nothing to do with this option at least.
