Succession Warrior Proposed Changes for PvP

Suggestions/Comments: Proposed changes & additions, followed by a breakdown of the issue and cause for validating their implementation.

 

• Prime: Spinning Slash - 5s cd → 4s cd.

• Prime: Counter - 5s cd → 4s cd.

• Prime: Ground Smash - 9s cd → 8s cd.

• Prime: Earth Tremor - 10s cd → 8s cd.

• Prime: Heavy Strike - 7s cd → 6s cd, more ways to cancel the end motion of the final attack. 

• Prime: Evasion - 3.5s cd → 2s cd, usable with Shift+S, backstep movement added for Shift+S

• Prime: Sideways Cut (new) - 4s cd, super armour, animation faster, no player collision, same distance as 2x Absolute: Sideways Cut but with one quick spin motion, can fast cast Energy Counter going either direction after movement ends, can be used to cancel other skill animations. 

• Prime: Deep Thrust (new) - 6s cd, damage, forward guard, knockback on attack 1 hits, explosive animation effect, continuous leaping attack when used after certain skills, F after use to activate Earth Tremor leap. Shift+RMB to activate (Absolute: Ground Roar becomes quickslot only or possibly F, with Absolute: Kick becoming quickslot only). 

• Prime: Furious Blow (new) - 9s cd, super armour, damage, +10% hp as damage , PvP stun when used after blocking 3 consecutive attacks while in Guard Stance. Shift+E to activate (Prime: Enhanced Spirit becomes quickslot only) 

• Shield Charge - now refreshes the duration of the Succession: Guard stacking DP buff upon use.

• Succession: Guard - usable to cancel more skill animations immediately.

• Prime: Forward Slash - usable to cancel Succession: Guard stance, usable to cancel more skill animations immediately.

• Prime: Pulverise - 8s cd → 7s cd, 150 HP per hit, faster animation, larger aoe. 

• Mediation - Restores 15% - 20% of maximum HP.

• Succession: War Cry (new) - 1m cd → 30s cd, Restores 30 points of forward guard gauge and removes forward guard gauge refill debuff for self and allies. 

• Absolute: Deep Ground Slash - input key changed from LMB → Space Bar, faster animation, can cancel with more skills, deals damage based on Prime: Ground Slash.

The main sticking points for succession warrior in PvP and general are as follows. 

The issues to be examined are numbered, while the solutions explained relative to the above proposed changes follow each issue respectively as dot points. 

1) Skill uptime is too low for present-day BDO PvP combat encounters, leading succession warrior to hold positions that are difficult to defend against due to insufficient outgoing damage pressure or momentum. 

• Slightly reduce cooldowns to allow sustained damage pressure and improve cadence during combat. New skills "Prime: Furious Blow", "Prime: Deep Thrust", "Prime: Sideways Cut" added to improve uptime and promote more dynamic play. 

• New ability "Prime: Deep Thrust" deals frontal cone knockback and aoe damage with forward guard protection. It can be used to continue combos and to poke damage and cc attempts at enemies. When activated after shield charge, solar flare or chopping kick, it can be used continuously as a leap attack that moves the warrior forward up to three times and maintains forward guard throughout. Pressing F after activation of either the single attack or moving attack will trigger Prime: Earth Tremor leaping attack. 

• Shield Charge refreshing the stacking DP buff from Succession: Guard would be a nice convenience that would allow us to retain Prime: Shield Strike for more opportune engagements. 

2) Repositioning is a real issue for succession warrior. Being unable to negotiate or escape situations where multiple enemies are sitting on the warrior, due to a lack of short distance, protected movement options and limited deterrent capacity. 

• New ability "Prime: Sideways Cut" added as a skill that can be used to manoeuvre more frequently during combat where shorter motions are required to avoid sitting duck syndrome (easy grapple and overwhelm target, unable to exit clusters).

• New ability "Prime: Furious Blow" added as an attack skill that can be used offensively or defensively to deter attempts at overwhelming the warrior's position. It has strong standing damage and no down attack modifier. 10% of maximum HP dealt as additional damage and a stun are applied to enemy players when used after blocking three successive attacks in PvP (these effects are applied unconditionally in PvE). 

• Improved "Prime: Evasion" by reducing the cooldown so that it may be used reliably to reposition in situations that require fast responses to overwhelming pressure, such as being focused by multiple enemies from several directions concurrently. A back stepping motion is added using Shift+S in order to provide more control and command over repositioning, reducing predictability. 

3) Animation cancelling for succession warrior relies heavily upon using Prime: Evasion in order to cancel animations for several of his skills which are required during combos, leading to situations where the warrior cannot use the skill for its intended functional purpose of avoiding attacks.  

• Allow Succession: Guard, Prime: Forward Slash and the new "Prime: Sideways Cut" to cancel more animations so that Prime: Evasion may be free for use in dodging enemy attacks.

4) Sustain has been an issue for succession warrior for some time now and is particularly obvious where BDO combat stands today.

• Improve the ability of the succession warrior to remain in the fight for longer by giving 150 HP on hit to Prime: Pulverise and consider increasing the health points recouperated by Meditation to a flat 15 - 20 percent of maximum HP. 

5) Forward guard nullification debuff entirely eliminates the class mechanic of warrior and many other classes that rely heavily on forward guard. An ability that entirely eliminates one's use of a core mechanic is a heavy-handed design, aimed at creating a niche for a particular class. Forward guard is already the least potent defence condition, having been diminished over the years to what it is now and further degraded by the overbearing class mechanic that completey voids its use. 

• In an attempt to provide some small counterplay to the excessive nature of the mechanic that eliminates forward guard recovery entirely, Succession: War Cry, upon use, would now replenish 30 points of forward guard gauge for self and allies, while also removing the class mechanic nullifying debuff. This option would allow succession warrior a noteworthy utility that could provide for intriguing interactions with allies in the midst of battle, a concept that has historically received little consideration in BDO outside of a few classes. 

6) Lackluster visual & sound effects compared to modern standards. 

• Elevate some of the older animations and sound effects to the standard of the Magnus skill Severing Thrust, for a more visceral and impactiful visual and auditory feel.

 

It is my belief that with these changes succession warrior would be better equipped to contend with the modern standard of scaled PvP combat, which demands increasingly rapid and responsive gameplay due to the ramping of mobility, damage and improved skill linkages over the years. These additions could be the capstone in creating a more robust and complete kit for the succession warrior, truly rounding out and defining the class after years of meaningful, albeit piecemeal updates.

 

Finally, these improvements would give our succession warrior the potential to make his uniquely awesome presence on the battlefield both feared and revered by enemies and allies respectively.
