GM Notes Dec 23, 2022, 00:00 (UTC) Meet the Guilds: Community Edition
6

Greetings, Adventurers!

It's [GM]Corruption and [GM]Ronin here to continue our Meet the Guilds series by featuring a representative from a selection of our NA and EU Community Guilds. We have connected with Aethyr, BDO_RoleplayESP, Night_Shade, Obsidian_Envoy, Relieved, and TGN to give you insight into one of the most important parts of your Black Desert Online experience--communities! Check out these interviews to read about their favorite Black Desert Online community events, how to maintain a healthy and active community within your guild, and much more.

* Did you know that we also interviewed lifeskill and node war guilds? You can find these interviews [here] and [here].

Please introduce yourself and describe your guild in 3 words.

Aethyr (NA)
My name is Mereena and I am the guild master of Aethyr. To describe us in 3 words, I would have to say: helpful, weird, and relaxed.
BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

Hello! I'm DaniRS, veteran adventurer and lead admin of Black Desert for Roleplay Español, a Spanish roleplay community and guild! I'm from Spain, as you can guess. (ง •_•)ง

I have been around since 2016 and I mainly focus on roleplay and PvE/life skills. I love to participate in all types of events and organize them for the roleplay community! So, if you see a platinum-blonde Valkyrie in a Black Desert event or slowly walking across the streets of Heidel, it's probably me! And how could I describe my guild with only three words...? Probably... Roleplay, friends and fun!

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
Hello there! I’m Leviath. Some may know me as the Overseer of the settlement roleplay guild known as Obsidian_Envoy. Others just call me Noxtua’s Guild Master. I think the title “Guild Butler” is more fitting from how much work and love it takes sometimes! If I had to describe my guild in three words, it would be… Tight-knit, Creative, and Supportive.
Night_Shade (EU)
I'm Tendur but all know me as Mal (the name that my guild members gave me from my 1st character Maltemp). I am the GM of Night_Shade. I started to play BDO in June 2017 and I live in Italy. Three words to describe Night_Shade? "Together We Do"
TGN (NA)
I am, Weisskranz, the current guildmaster of TGN.
Three words to describe TGN: Friendly, chill and diverse.
Relieved (EU)
Hello, I'm Sakura_Hikari. I am the guild master of the guild Relieved since 2019. I’ve been playing BDO since 2017. I would describe Relieved in 3 words: Relieved, Versatile, Persistent.

How long has your guild been around?

Aethyr (NA)
Aethyr has been around since August 2020.
BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

How long? Wow, I think a lot of time! Approximately five years if I didn't forget how to count. We created the guild on September 4th of 2016, but we renamed it to the name we have now when we established the roleplay community in June 2017. It has been a while!

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
Obsidian_Envoy has been around since the 16th of January 2020, nearly three years ago and we are still going strong.
Night_Shade (EU)
Night_Shade was born on September 8, 2016 and is like quality wine becoming better year by year.
TGN (NA)
TGN was founded on March 7th, 2016. So a really long time ago lol.
Relieved (EU)
Relieved was founded on June 28th, 2017. Since then, we have always been around, exploring all different types of content in BDO.

What types of content do your guild members enjoy in game?

Aethyr (NA)
We have a wide variety of members that enjoy a variety of things. Many of us prefer the PvE aspect, but we also have members who love to do various life skills, PvP, and even roleplay.
BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

Mainly roleplay! And most of us also do PvE thingies and life skills. Some even do a lot of PvP. So many people and tastes!

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
The type of content my guildies and I love the most would be creating and developing storylines through roleplay and creating our own dice system similar to DnD to immerse ourselves in the world of Black Desert as well as Atoraxxion dungeons! Grinding and skirmishing in friendly GVG’s are always welcome!
Night_Shade (EU)
Our guild has the luck to embrace the game from 360 degrees. We have members that like more PvP, members that focus more on PvE aspects and members that enjoy more life skill activities. Everyone that plays Black Desert knows that every part of the game is connected to others. We follow and apply this in our guild too, helping each other in every aspect of the game to fully enjoy it.
TGN (NA)
Pretty much everything to be honest, with the exception of NW (node war) and CW (conquest war). But my guild members partake in life skilling, PvE/PvP, and weekly guild bosses. The majority of our guild activities are done during the weekends in order to ensure as many people have time, since work, family and friends are most people's #1 priority as they should be.
Relieved (EU)
Mainly we enjoy Khan, Vell, guild bosses, and some members enjoy node wars too. Besides that, people enjoy grinding, Red Battlefield and life skilling.

Within your memory, what was the most fun Black Desert community event? Why?

Aethyr (NA)
One of the most fun Black Desert community events that I remember was when GM Polly and another GM that I cannot remember at the moment had a PvP event. GM Polly’s team was #SnailGang. While I was awful at PvP and quite under geared compared to my opponent, I still had fun nonetheless. It was just nice to see so many people there just to have fun and be silly.
BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

The most fun event? To be honest, all of them are really fun, at least for me! I had lots of fun at the Summer Festa events and the Ocean Trips! But If I have to choose one... Voice of Adventures Europe 2022! I had a BLAST participating in this event, travelling to another country for the first time and finally meeting all the GMs and CMs was so nice. I also met a lot of friends I made on Black Desert and could also see people that I met years ago! It was incredible seeing all of the Black Desert community together, the Black Desert team, solving riddles, playing mini-games, testing my English and completing the VoA Adventure Log... I don't have enough ways to say how happy I am!

Night_Shade (EU)
For sure we enjoy the Halloween events a lot. It always creates a great atmosphere with lovely songs and it’s always fun for us to try to finish the haunted house, running as little pumpkins.

If you could make one event for the Black Desert Community, what would it be?

TGN (NA)

An event I think would be amazing would be a PvE Siege event at either Calpheon or Valencia castle or any of the big cities. There are likely some limitations and also a significant portion of the development team would have to focus on it. So, you're not gonna see me hold my breath but given the epic scale of BDO, that would be something that would make me go "Dang that's hecking awesome"

BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

Well, well, well... What a question! It's hard to make a brand-new event that has not been previously done. You guys are so good at making events! But for some weeks I have been bothering Velia, Erethea and Sulfur with something... It looks like all GMs and CMs love to play Yar and some of you have become really good at it. So... let's put it to good use!

Everyone knows about Pokémon and the gym/badges thing, right? Why don't we make something similar? During a couple of weeks, adventurers could duel the "gym" leaders at certain towns to gain a badge (of course, a hand-drawn badge on a piece of paper!) and once they have collected all the badges, they can challenge the Yar League (the best GMs at Yar!)! If you like the idea, let me know and I will explain in detail!

Night_Shade (EU)
It could be, “Open Guild Doors” day where players could join and visit different guilds like universities do for potential students with open door days (maybe bypassing the mercenary cap if a guild has already capped at 100 members).

Many community guilds describe themselves as a family, do you feel like one? How so?

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
I would definitely describe Obsidian_Envoy as a family of sorts. At least, that is what my guildies become to me not after long. But why? It is because I believe we are willing to teach and train everyone from their first steps out of the gate all they may need to know for their adventure onwards. If they decide to leave, more often than not, it’s not goodbye because they will always have a place in our memories from the time we bonded. And they will always have a place to come back to with us, much like a home.
TGN (NA)

I would say my fellow guild members and I are doing our best to make TGN feel like a home to everyone. We have no participation rules and have had a few people leave to go on their own new adventures, be it in a new guild or IRL (in real life). But equally as many have returned, whom we've welcomed with open arms. Since we are a guild that houses members from all over the world, we've made sure there's always someone around in case a question arises or if someone wants to knock out a mission in the wee hours of the night. We got them covered.

Night_Shade (EU)
For sure family is the most used word when we speak of a guild and this happens because sometimes there is like a chemical reaction that binds members to each other giving the resulting feeling such as being in a family. Some of us have known each other for five years or more. We shared our successes and our failures (in game and in real-life). As an international guild we are so far from each other in the real world but so near each other here and this was possible thanks to Black Desert.

What top 3 tips do you have for maintaining a healthy and active community within your guild?

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
My top 3 tips for a healthy guild, is make time to spend with your guildies, always be thinking of positive and fun things you can do for and with your guildies, whether that's a game night, or pvp practice night! Make it happen! Understand, as a GM, you won’t make everyone happy, no matter how much you want to. And accept yourself at your best!
BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

First of all, and most importantly, be patient, respectful and positive with everyone! As an administrator, moderator or guild leader, you need to always be neutral in all situations! If you do something wrong, just apologize! There is nothing bad about making a mistake. The important part is that you can recognize it and learn from it.

Second! Be active moderating or administrating your community or guild. Even if you establish rules or guidelines, not everyone will follow them. Always keep an open eye. Moderate and take action against bad behaviors and educate your members if they do something wrong. The base of a healthy community is maintaining the toxicity levels at zero. So do your best to prevent it and not let controversial topics rise up!

Third, engage with your community or guild! It's really important that everyone sees the leaders, admins or mods of the project being active. Talk with your members, engage in conversations and hold events or activities. It helps in building confidence and boost the activity of the community!

Relieved (EU)

1. Never stop recruiting new members. People come and go. It is inevitable. Don't feel bad if people leave.

2. Having the right people to be officers is crucial to maintaining the guild function.

3. Have a good Discord server for guild communication and information.

Have you ever considered a real-life meeting-up with your guild members or have you done any in the past?

Aethyr (NA)
Yes, I have considered doing a real-life meet-up with my guild members. It is not something we have done quite yet, but once everyone else is comfortable with the idea, I do plan on suggesting it. I have already planned to do a big cookout for everyone because many of them have been open to it already.
Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
Yes, that I have! I actually had one this year with one of my officers who I took with me as my +1 to VOA Boston. It was a complete blast!
Relieved (EU)

I did meet a few close members in real life, but that's all. I wouldn't hold an IRL meeting. Because of physical distance, we have members mainly from EU, but also from USA and Asia. And most importantly, people have their own very busy lives. IRL is much more important.

If you could make one change in Black Desert Online, what would it be? Why?

Aethyr (NA)
I would definitely make a change to the war declaration system. There are so many guilds that will just permanently declare war on a guild for no real reason and just harass people when they are just trying to do field bosses, life skills, or are simply minding their own business doing quests. The receiving guild should be able to dispute it or something like that.
TGN (NA)

I wish the access to guild storage was more granular. We had a rather annoying issue regarding a certain player in the past where they would join guilds, take materials out of the guild storage and leave the guild in order to grief the affected guild.

I know the people handling tickets have gotten a fair share from me regarding that. Especially since they could change family and character names to subvert us detecting them and do it again. That was definitely annoying to have to deal with.

Relieved (EU)

Combine Bheg/Leebur and Urugon/Muskan in a way that allows us to distribute and choose the specific stats for each gear piece. This way, we can freely decide to take evasion or damage reduction and switch to different play styles without needing to have two sets of boots or gloves.

Any final words you would like to express?

Aethyr (NA)
Nothing that I can think of. Thank you to the devs and everyone else who put so much effort into making Black Desert Online such a wonderful game to play.

BDO_RoleplayESP (EU)

Sure! I would like to thank the Black Desert team for all they do from events, to helping adventurers, keeping our spirits up and making our experience much more enjoyable. I have been playing for a long time now and I can now surely say that Black Desert changed my life, a lot. I'm a very introverted person and it helped me overcome a bit of my social anxiety, mainly because of being the admin of the roleplay community. Being able to talk with several people, make announcements, hold events... I wasn't able to a few years ago! I even travelled to another country to meet a lot of people and spoke in English!

I am truly thankful for being able to have a place to relax and be myself in a world full of things to see and explore and full of awesome new people to meet... a place to forget about all the bad stuff. If I'm here now it's all thanks to Black Desert, the people that helped me during these years and all the GMs and CMs. Once again, thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

Night_Shade (EU)
To replay to this, I think we just give our thanks to PA for making such a good game, creating joyful experiences, uniting people and gathering communities who can enjoy the game together while being in different places in the world.

Obsidian_Envoy (NA)
Always keep in mind: Black Desert is a game. A fantastic one, but no matter what, the community should always come before anything else in the game. Without it, having a guild would be a quiet and lonely place which is why I am thankful for the friends that I have, who have stood by me for all these years!

Relieved (EU)

BDO is a great game, but there are still many small things in BDO that should be corrected or changed. Quality of life is very important. Fixing these small problems will make the gaming experience much, much better, even better than providing new game content or new classes. I think this is the real thing that PA should be focused on. PS. Please stop making something like Papu Island. It's occupying our hard drives only.

1. Guild Missions: Mission type RNG in different servers is acceptable, but we strongly suggest that mission size be free to choose like summoning guild bosses. And mission’s 10/10 amount limit should be raised to at least 20 per day.

2. Guild Points: Maximum guild points are 2000 (2002) meanwhile, there still are 943 points that have nowhere to be spent.
We suggest adding new guild passive skills to be available to learn like Drop Rate, AP, DP, Monster AP/DP/Acc/Eva, different types of Life skill EXP, Combat EXP etc. This way we can add characteristics to different types of guilds, PVP/PVE/PVX etc.

3. Summoning Guild Bosses in closer locations or at the same place.
Puturum is way, way too far. Really, we are wasting too much time on traveling and waiting for members to arrive.

4. Allow officers to renew members' contracts on different servers.
This would save us a lot of time and be much more convenient. (GM Note: Mentioned at Calpheon Ball)

5. Guild Members within the same alliance cannot attend each other’s Khan boss, neither directly nor by mercenary. It should be allowed to attend Guild Bosses directly or by mercenary.

6. The trading life skill needs a rework.

7. Remove the HP vignette effect with low HP. (GM Note: Toggle option implemented in [Patch Notes - December 21, 2022])

8. Cancel the hide fort amount until one hour before node war starts.
For strong PvP guilds it doesn't matter but for the others, they have lost the advantage to use their brains and place forts strategically.

TGN (NA)

I want to say that all of the GM's, CM's and developers are doing a good job improving the game and listening to the community. We aren't always seeing eye to eye on all priorities, but I definitely feel like the players’ voices are being heard more now than ever and it's a welcome change for sure. So keep up the good work 🙂
