The chat system I think has been overlooked by the dev team over the years. It works but also can break pretty easily and has missing features which could vastly improve QoL. For reference when I say "Normal chat", this means the chat used after pressing the enter key. "Private chat" is the DM system that was released not too long ago that utilizes your friends list.
Normal chat issues:
1. You cannot go back and edit what you wrote if the text goes beyond a certain point.
2. You can easily lose what you are writing particularly when something attacks you and you have to quickly kill it before chatting again.
3. You can't press the up arrow to get an old chat message that you sent which is a modern chat convenience.
4. Text cannot be copied and pasted which is a shame because there are so many use cases where this is important. ie: Sharing a link to a guide or discord url.
5. There is no text padding to the right side of the chat box (viewing messages) and as a result, the last character can be cut in half.
6. Fix the report button already, it never worked.
7. Typing often makes your character move around. Doesn't always happen but happens often enough.
Private chat issues:
1. Default text doesn't always disappear so you have to backspace and delete "Enter Message"
2. Reading messages is set to "break character" instead of "break word" so it looks really awkward in English when a word is sent ot the next line.
3. The UI is non-intuitive. There should at the very least be a triple dot menu " ··· " to let us open a menu for the user (right click simulation).
4. Deatch chat has Padding issues for some of the buttons, namely the emoji button.
Normal Chat improvements needed:
1.Please redesign the actual chat when you press the ENTER key. It looks like it was designed in the 90s and doesn't flow with the rest of the UI elements.
2. Allow us to repeat an emoji by clicking on it
3. Permit us to change the font from a list which could also be edited in an XML file or something so we can customize this. ie: Arial, Calibri, Open Dyslexic, etc...
4. Allow more control over what is shown within certain categories. I have no idea what everything is included under "System General" but there are many things I don't want to see.
5. What the heck is group chat? "Adventurers who are in the same group" but there's party chat and there's no way to create chat groups?
6. Let us click an X button when there's a GM announcement, you know that gold banner that cannot be closed on the chat window?
7. Please consider adding a Guild Recruitment chat which uses megaphones but they are for The guild recruitments. Pretty tired of seeing walls of text for guild messages and make recruitment a reportable offense if it's outside that chat.
8. Party and guild sound effects which can be used such as <s1> to warn other players to attack or run away etc.... Useful in siege and other situations. Not a feature available in other chat types (obviously) and can be turned off / full volume control.
9. Chat macros with quick buttons next to chat [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ]. This can be used during siege to make it easier. Perhaps this can be a ui on its own that can be turned on whenever. "!RUN AWAY" "!FIRE!!" etc....
Private Chat improvements needed:
1. Need Private group channels like linkshells in final fantasy. It's quite annoying having to be in the same party to chat with others in the same group or having to use discord.
2. I don't know if the microphone system works on PC (I think it does on xbox?) but I don't see an option to use it in private chat. If this feature doesn't exist natively then nevermind.
3. Set to center button icon doesn't make sense. It's a page but why? Maybe a box with arrows pointing towards each other? IDK
Those are all the improvements and changes I can think of for now. The chat system deseperately needs improvements to be modernized and it would be such a big QoL change. What do you guys think? What other improvements can be made?
3. You can't press the up arrow to get an old chat message that you sent which is a modern chat convenience.
You can do this, what you can't do is pressing the down to navigate backwards in the messeages.
1. You cannot go back and edit what you wrote if the text goes beyond a certain point.
Yeah you only can nagivate in the text input line in the visible range, the text that is already out from the edit box can't be navigated anymore. This is a bug as the game actually moves the curzor, the display is just bugged and don't show it.
4. Text cannot be copied and pasted which is a shame because there are so many use cases where this is important. ie: Sharing a link to a guide or discord url.
You can paste into your own messeage, and you can copy from your own edit line(shift+arrows to select text). You can not copy from other's text that is true.(Altrough generally not many games support the later.)
6. Fix the report button already, it never worked.
It does work, it just purposely disabled for players, so they not spam false reports on ppl who they don't like.
7. Typing often makes your character move around. Doesn't always happen but happens often enough.
Yeah since the UI is lowquality sphageti code haxed together with pain and suffering of lowtier devs, the last character you pressed will trigger other stuff aswell if you press the enter fast. Like if your sentence ends with T then it starts the autopathing so move.
^ In other words, the chat system could be polished because as it is, it's pretty buggy. The little things that don't work adds up though, and the more you use it the more obvious and obstructive it becomes. It's hard to convince someone to keep trying the game when elements like these are so buggy. It's not a show-stopper but when one of the core features is so buggy and has never been addressed since its inception, then what does that mean for the rest of the game? Need to leave a good impression IMO.
