Choosing the best Balenos Crossroad!

Greetings Adventurers,

In the vast and intricate world of Black Desert Online, the choices you make often shape the trajectory of your adventures: once you pick a crossroad, it can’t be changed. Thus, it is important to pick the best for you, to not get stuck. As you embark on the Breaker of Chains questline (Balenos Main Quest), several pivotal decisions loom ahead: selecting one of the two alternative paths proposed by the four crossroads. Making an informed choice is crucial, and understanding the nuances of each crossroad is essential. Let's delve into the options to help you decide which path aligns best with your interests and playstyle.

Note! Don't hesitate to ask for more information in the comments! And remember that you can copy and paste the title in the CTRL+F bar to navigate the document!

Table of Contents

1.2 Nothing Beats Food vs Only Fear Reveals the Truth

2. Breaker of Chains: Velia

2.2 Old Chief's Parting Gift to His People! vs. Black Stones Have a Time and Place!

3. F.A.Q.

Breaker of Chains is the reworked and voiced Main Quest (MQ) happening in Balenos Territory. You wake up in the Ancient Stone Chamber, but you encounter the first crossroad in the Wester Guard Camp. As mentioned before, Breaker of Chains presents a total of 4 crossroads. However, we can break the whole questline into 3 sections.

Breaker of Chains
The Ancient Stone Chamber

The initial part of the MQ.

No Crossroads here.

Western Guard Camp

2 crossroads. It ends with the epilogue of the story of Tiny Nose.

Note! Yes, the story has different endings (4) determined by your choices (see F.A.Q.)

Velia & The Cron Castle

2 crossroads. It ends with the epilogue of the story of Grusha.

Note! Yes, the story has different endings (3) determined by your choices (see F.A.Q.)

Note! Unlike other old questlines, the objectives of the quests do not differ as much. Picking one crossroad instead of another one will help you find out more about the story, and obtain knowledge and titles.

◈ Breaker of Chains: The Western Guard Camp

After helping the people at the Western Guard Camp, Roig Mills, the butler of Princess Jarette, seems to have something to say.

The Western Guard Camp
Crossroad A
No Greater Honor You Need What Now? Not a Chance!
Crossroad B
Nothing Beats Food Only Fear Reveals the Truth

◈ No Greater Honor vs. You Need What Now? Not a Chance!

[Crossroad] No Greater Honor
Accept Roig Mills' proposal to serve Princess Jarette Domongatt of Serendia. You think just anyone gets a chance to work for the Princess of Serendia? They say seizing the right opportunity is a skill in itself, and there's no greater honor than to work for her highness. It all depends on how you fare. - Roig Mills -
[Crossroad] You Need What Now? Not a Chance!
Reject Roig Mills' proposal to serve Princess Jarette Domongatt of Serendia. You want to work for that shrill Human who looked down us from the moment we first met? Princesses come and go. It's a waste of time to swear fealty to some lowly Human. Not to mention, they could always end up dragging us down somewhere along the line. You still think it's worth it? Hehehe! Reject her proposal. I'm sure it'll be more interesting. - Black Spirit-

◈ Nothing Beats Food vs. Only Fear Reveals the Truth

Nothing Beats Food
Learn about Red Nose not through brute force, but by bribing Tiny Nose with roasted Wolf Meat. Tiny Nose is an Imp smart enough to trade with Humans. A slab of meat or three will help make him cooperate. There's no need to resort to violence, right? They're actually quite a nice lot, hehe! Imps that seem to display an ounce of intelligence prefer fresh Wolf Meat, but an Imp at Tiny Nose's level will probably have developed taste buds similar to Humans who prefer their meat cooked! - Imp Expert Uno
Only Fear Reveals the Truth
Learn about Red Nose by breaking Tiny Nose's mineral wagon used for dealing with Humans to extort information from Tiny Nose. I think I can deduce just how the Imps got their hands on these weapons. Tiny Nose is known as the one who threatened the Western Guard Camp. Seeing how intelligent he is, he may give us false information as well. However, if we destroy his precious mineral wagon, deal a heavy blow to all his efforts made thus far, he may just about spill the truth. For truth is revealed in the face of fear. - Officer Feinia -

◈ Breaker of Chains: Velia

There's a coastal village nearby, Velia. Go to Alustin, a wise man there, and report to him on the situation regarding the stone.

Note! Once you reach Alustin, if you choose to create a seasonal character, the game will allow you to skip the MQ. Instead, you will receive the rewards by leveling up your character. However, you'll need to complete the MQ at least once to unlock this option. Also, to unlock knowledge and titles related to specific crossroads, you'll need to do the normal MQ.

Velia
Crossroad A
Let's Talk About This!  Abandon Coexisting with Goblins!
Crossroad B
Old Chief's Parting Gift to His People!  Black Stones Have a Time and Place!

◈ Let's Talk About This! vs. Abandon Coexisting with Goblins!

Let's Talk About This!
Learn about Giath by taking the most peaceful route of siding with the Goblins alongside Grusha. The Goblins were originally quite nice - this is all because of those darn Imps! And yet, there are still those among them that wish for the peaceful old days. They'll probably help you locate Chief Giath. You can trust in these Goblins! - Grusha -
Abandon Coexisting with Goblins!
Learn about Giath by thinning the Goblin numbers with Tachros and forcing them to confess. The rampant actions of the Goblins have caused much losses in our trade with Serendia. They've already proven that words aren't enough to resolve this matter. We're out of time. We need to hurry and extract as much information on Giath as quickly as possible. The best means is to spread fear in the woods. Those who can't bare to see their own suffer will soon come to us to talk. - Tachros -

◈ Old Chief's Parting Gift to His People! vs. Black Stones Have a Time and Place!

Old Chief's Parting Gift to His People!
Synthesize the Black Stone entrusted to Grusha by the old chief to create the Sands of Time used to summon Giath, the Goblin King. I wonder if the old Chief Giath (now the Goblin King) left this Black Stone behind... for a time like this? The Goblins would rather seek death than to lose their war horns! They're as dear to them as their very lives. Please, use this Black Stone. Let the parting gift of an old chief for his people be of some use. - Grusha -
Black Stones Have a Time and Place!
Synthesize a Goblin's War Horn instead of the Black Stone to craft the Sands of Time to summon Giath, the Goblin King. Why use the Black Stone when there's a known replacement? Do you not understand just how valuable these stones are? Why else would everyone be talking about Black Stone this and Black Stone that... We should never treat these stones lightly. Those sitting in lofty chairs will know how to put them to good use! - Tachros -

◈ F.A.Q.

1. Do the choices you make in the Western Guard Camp arc affect what happens to Tiny Nose?

Despite what many Adventurers say, the answer is yes. Don't get me wrong, you won't see big changes in the world and the difference can be noticed only by carefully reading/listening to the final dialogue, right before visiting Velia. You can find out all the endings in this YouTube Video.

Tiny Nose Story: Possible Outcomes
No Greater Honor You Need What Now? Not a Chance!
Nothing Beats Food You served Princess Jarette, and now she's happy. Jarrette and the soldiers at Western Guard Camp recognize Tiny Nose's genius and want him to work for them. You friendly approached Tiny Nose, so now he wants to join the humans.

Outcome: Tiny Nose is safe and found a new job. Everyone is happy.

You told Princess Jarette to go F herself and she isn't happy about it. Thus, despite you defeating the Red Nose, she won't move a finger to help you. However, you friendly approached Tiny Nose, so now he wants to join the humans. Too bad you didn't network.

Outcome: Tiny Nose, despite his goodwill, is imprisoned. Princess Jarette &co. hate you.

Only Fear Reveals the Truth

You served Princess Jarette, and now she's happy. Jarrette and the soldiers at Western Guard Camp recognize Tiny Nose's genius and want him to work for them. However, you destroyed Tiny Nose's business, so now he hates your guts.

Outcome: Tiny Nose is forced to work for the humans against his will. Tiny Nose hates you.

You told Princess Jarette to go F herself and she isn't happy about it. Moreover, you destroyed Tiny Nose's business, so now he hates your guts, too. Tiny Nose not only gets imprisoned, but he also refuses to cooperate with humans.

Outcome: Tiny Nose is imprisoned. Everyone hates you.

2. Do the choices you make in the Western Guard Camp arc affect what happens in Velia?

Yes, but don't worry: it's just a detail and it won't affect your future choices. The only choice that is going to affect your stay in Velia is the first crossroad (No Greater Honor vs. You Need What Now? Not a Chance). However, as mentioned, it will barely affect you, as in when Hans, the guard, welcomes you to Velia.

Welcome to Velia!
No Greater Honor You Need What Now? Not a Chance!
Congratz! You worked on your networking skills, and you made a lot of friends on your way to Velia (aka Jarette &co.)! Now Hans is ready to warmly welcome you!

Hans: I'm Hans, a Velia Vigilante. Aren't you the one being credited with defeating Red Nose? Your praises are being sung by the great Captain Cliff! If you'd chosen to enlist, I'm certain you'd have been set for life.

You listen to your Black Spirit and now Jarette &co. are mad at you! You defeated the Red Nose, but nobody is going to believe you now!

Hans: I'm Hans, a Velia Vigilante. Rumors have it that you've tried to take credit for the defeat of Red Nose... To get your name dragged through the mud like that... who did you piss off?

3. Do the choices you make in the Velia arc affect what happens to Grusha?

Yes. In particular, you can unlock three (3) different endings, each with a related knowledge entry: Grusha's Dream, Grusha's Whereabouts, and Grusha's Maw. You can find out all the endings in this YouTube Video.

Grusha Story: Possible Outcomes
Let's Talk About This! Abandon Coexisting with Goblins!
Old Chief's Parting Gift to His People! Grusha's Dream

Grusha's Dream

Black Stones Have a Time and Place!

Grusha's Whereabouts

Grusha's Maw*

*TIP! If you want to unlock the knowledge entry "Tachros' Nightmare", go to speak with Tachros after achieving Grusha's Maw ending.

FYI, I have Tachro's Nightmare, but do not have Grusha's Whereabouts, just Dream and Maw.  Maybe Nightmare comes after Maw, instead of or also from Whereabouts?

Yeah! You're right! It's Grusha's Maw!
