Just guessing, but it seems like the multiple hits were not just in timing, but in the location they were applied too. I think I saw someone else mention that here on another thread. So when they reduced hits / upped damage, they also changed where that damage lands. Which would be consistent with the animation issues that people have been reporting, that they no longer correspond accurately with the actual damage application.
Small suggestion for the people struggling with MP recovery post update: Make sure to unlearn Sunfall. It might slow down the clear in some places, but only casting Earth Shatter will keep you topped on MP all the time.
