The matchmaking system right now is showing obvious signs that the priority is finding a match as quick as possible while sacrificing the quality of matches. This obviously lead to a lot of people getting pissed at the game mode. It is one thing to be annoyed for losing a winnable fight, but it is a different thing to lose because you are matched against an unwinnable enemy comp or the enemy have some top ranked player while you are just average rank. For preface, I am just a normal player, I am way behind in terms of getting to the top leaderboard. This has nothing to do with buffing my class or making the matchmaking more for my class favor.
I'll show my most recent matches for reference.
As can be seen here, there are obvious team imbalance in almost all of the matchups. Now here are some of the obvious issues and what I think could help the issue.
1. Set categories of classes so double class in same team while enemy not having that class would not be a thing.
You should not be facing double zerk while having double caster in your team. Ideally each team would be one caster one zerk. This can be easily solved by placing a category under what each class is, and ensure that the composition of each team is not doubling categories in an unbalanced way. For example we can set categories such as ranged dps, crowd control bruiser, and agility dps.
Wizard, witch, archer, awk corsair, succ ranger, maegu goes under ranged dps class.
Musa, ninja, kuno, musa, maehwa, woosa, awk ranger, dosa, sorc, tamer, awk nova, DK, lahn, sage goes under agility dps.
Zerk, valk, succ nova, hash, drak, striker, mystic, guardian, warrior, succ corsair, scholar goes under crowd control bruiser.
For shais only solution I have is both team needs to either have 0 shai or both team have one shai due to how much the gameplay changes with shai.
Obviously this is just very rough made in 5 min comp, so please don't rail me too deep on this, but this concept should not be too hard to implement with the matchmaking system. Set it so that when one team have two ranged dps, the other team also have two ranged dps instead of having matches where one team have two succ caster while the other team have two musa.
2. Stop focusing on matching as quick as possible. The ranks in a match should not be more than 50 point from the average of that match.
When you are around 1.5k mmr, under zero circumstances you should be allowed to be in the same match as someone who is 1.8k mmr, and yet I have encountered that multiple time.
This is my experience in red rank, and I believe most people who play AOS right now is playing in red or yellow rank, so there surely won't be any shortage of people queuing. Most of my matches are found below 30 second. I would assume most active players in AOS would not mind waiting for 3 minutes for a match where winning is possible instead of getting stomped because enemy team have someone who is two league above your rank. Seeing my matches, while it seems that the average mmr of each team seems to be balanced out, it can clearly be see that the individual mmr varies too much.
Note that this is mmr after the match, so both sides has their score went up or down before this screenshot was taken.
While it seems that the difference in average mmr between team is less than 50 before the match started, this is just a lazy matchmaking way to give the impression that the teams are equal in strength while ignoring the fact that the player skill increase a lot with 100 mmr difference, let alone 300+ mmr gap that happens when a yellow rank is matched with purple rank.
The solution is simple, instead of making both team within 50 mmr difference by average, do it so that each individual player is within 50 mmr from the match average.
For example if a game have an average of 1500 mmr, each team should have players that is between 1450 to 1550 mmr. No player outside of this range.
I am sure that this content is not such a dead content yet where the range between individual player need to be widened so far where a purple needs to goes into a low red match or get stuck waiting an hour for a match.
3. Add a team forfeit vote option. (Temporary solution)
If PA is so reluctant to make the changes, one solution I could think of is to add a vote forfeit at the start of a match.
When the player name and classes of both team has been shown before the first round, during the wait time have both team an option to vote to forfeit the match.
What's the catch? You only lose and gain half of the mmr that you're supposed to gain/lose when you win. If both team forfeits, the match ends with 0 change in MMR.
Right now from my experience, each match loss or win will net you somewhere between 18 to 29 point change. This is such a huge point gap especially when you got the bad rng in team comp or if one of your teammate didn't make it due to disconnection before the first round even started. With this option available, you still have the option to just move to the next match while minimizing the damage done by factors outside your control.
Have it so that to forfeit, you need 2 out of 3 votes from the team. That's it.
It minimizes your loss when both your teammate have lost morale and just threw the game, it also minimize the loss when you have one non connect in your team and forced to play 2 round at disadvantage. Instead of losing 24 points, you only lose 12 points while the enemy also only gained 12 points.
Other competitive games, such as league, has options to pick classes when the match start, but it doesn't exist here so this would be a bandaid solution to imbalance due to rng.
4. Regarding alts and smurfs
Another thing I want to mention is the smurfing and using alts. It is getting commonly known that a lot of the top players are playing on second or third accounts. You can easily check your class leaderboard and it is probably filled with 30% new accounts who only have 2-3 character and all lifeskill at beginner 1 but somehow is the best in their class. This isn't as serious as an issue but it definitely impacts the mmr distribution as the games are, I assume, zero sum games, so with more alts going to top places, it makes it so the player in top ranks wouldn't be able to find matches because everyone in their mmr range is mostly their own alts. It also really discourages players who aim to get to top 100 leaderboard for the rewards. During their climb they also disrupt the team balance in those matches a lot. I don't know what would be the solution for this situation, but I just personally find it off.
I enjoy playing this gamemode, it is just annoying for me that sometimes the match is just unfun to play because sometimes it is way too onesided. I don't mind losing when our team just missed our shot at winning, but losing knowing you had zero chance of winning is just sad, especially where there is MMR in place.
AOS has been complained about multiple times, yet PA chooses to not listen anyway
Hence why garbage like buffs in the arena and the dumb Tzol Ruins remains

This event will be funny when most of the top 100 are smurfs so even if everybody shows up it might be only 60 or 70 actual players present due to the smurfs. It ruins the plans and considering that the prize for the event will probably be pearls like last time maybe there should even be punishments given since it can be a exploit of a event.
Yeah, and please, as shai id like to dont get another shai on my team... its a free lose
Yes please fix matchmaking! I dropped to yellow elo and ended up on a top 20 player's team against another top 20 player.
I've also calculated that over 15% of the matches I played this season were double Ranger (I am a Ranger main, and we were not against any Rangers), and it is nearly 20% if you count Ranger/Archer. This is after I actively avoided every Ranger I knew was in queue. Any time a Ranger queued at the same time as me, they almost always ended up on my team.
I almost never had an optimal team composition, it was always something extremely squishy like Musa/Maewha/Ranger, double Dark Knight + Ranger, or double Kunoichi + Ranger and I was almost always fighting a team that could one-shot me through Super Armor or an extremely tanky team. I can count on one hand the amount of times I had a good team composition.
