So...on the plus side, if you get in...it's great as the servers are empty. On the minus side, if you get DCed, you have to wait for ages to get back in again...
What you said has nothing to do with any relevant point to a supposed broken feature.
Server are overloaded, when this happens many users can't connect until the overload is done. This is expected server behavior.
If anything login server isn't tailored for such a load, but this isn't a thing anybody is able to test in a pre-production environment.
Yesterdays issue had nothing to do with the player amount because if it did it would happen consistently every maintenance which it does not.
