So after quite a long time, we finally got a new major expansion.

Here's a full list of the content that's interesting for most players:

- get the flame and leave again.

And you seriously wonder why everyone wants to skip the stupid cutscenes? They're just paint on an empty box.

Pretty much nothing there is worth doing it, and of course you turned the droprates for the only thing that people want, down to abysimal small values, to stretch that "content".

Starting with day 1 people can't wait to leave the place again and go back to Elvia. Now if you are worried that you've put a lot of work into cutscenes, MAYBE also think about how much work you put into that entire area, that nobody cares about.

Black Desert's story telling is really bad. The player is frequently introduced to overly complex names and concepts that the player has no idea about. Examples of such ridiculous names are: Atraxxion, Vahmalkea, Sycrakea, Heart of Armaggogalaia (I don't even know how to spell it) that was stolen by some witch.

Characters in game babble on and on about names such as that. Right near the beginning of the Eternal Winter we are introduced to even more ridiculous names that really don't have much meaning to the player. For a while I thought maybe the english translation of the story was just bad compared to the Korean version. But then during the CalpheON live stream when I heard them mention how all their players just like to press R and skip through the story I realized that its not our translation, but the story telling is just plain bad.

Another problem with the story is how its delivered. Its pretty much: Hear long babbling from npcs then auto path from point A to point B and hear more babbling from more npcs. This happens over and over again.

If PA wants to improve their story telling ability maybe they should take a look at FF14 or even GW2. Both have good stories but FF14 story telling is the better of the two.

I think the main problem is, if you have several hours of utterly boring content that makes you want to skip all of it, you don't become suddenly interested in the story in between, no matter how good it would be.

That's like a dish that makes you puke and PA is asking to pick a couple raisins sparkled into it, because they put work into getting those raisins. What they don't understand is that the whole thing is just as bad and rewardless as you possibly can imagine.

Coming from a player who played both these games (Currentply playing FF14 and just finished Heavensward, GW2 played all expansions except the recent one), these games are indeed more story focused, but have their issues as well.

The biggest problem I have with FF14 is the story being way too deep and complicated. It's hard for me to learn and understand all the different names from npc's, items, towns, zones etc, and the storyline is way too political. The Heavensward expansion was better, but still not good enough. That being said, I still have to play the remaining expansions, and I hear players saying they are really good, so I will not form an opinion on these until I played them myself.

With GW2, I felt the way the story is told does not feel immersive. You often see a cutscene with an artistic background where two characters with standard talking animations are speaking some lines to each other, and the characters aren't portraying emotions well enough (anger, happiness, sadness etc).

The mentioned downsides aside, these games are good and I'd recommend both mainly to casual players, as these games are for the majority geared towards casuals (aside from raids, pvp, etc).

About storytelling, ironically I think GW1 does it way better for its time. Of course, the animations there are a little more stiff since it's a very old game, but at least the cutscenes feature your character and all characters you play with, take place in the location where it happens, and are easy to understand. I really miss that game and its wonderful setting!

When was the last time you played gw2? Because that seems like the personal story from the vanilla game. The living story is nothing like that.

I dont know since BDO players are a very special breed of degens.

I was impressed from all that voice acting, need some time to play all that through.

While some of the npcs are really talking weird stuff about some eagles unable to cross a montain and 6 witches, like they smoked the biggest blunt.

Talking to that mercenarys was pretty comedical.

Its bust a big improvement with this update and the new class does not seem to break the akustic barrier in balancing. So this is also an improvement.

The story was just listening to people speaking like watching a movie.

I liked it. I never really cared about that gearrace. I think its pityful to see people grind that flame just to log out again.

The only problem of this game is the peoples utter poor mentality about such things and the game focussing to much on these kind of players.

I like it that PA puts resources in the storytelling methods. Voiceovers are good and the cutscenes were ok too. Problem with the new story was not in the telling, but the story itself. I really think the writers are not doing a very good job of keeping it all together. At least for a westerner, following the storyline is really tedious and takes a lot of effort to keep up with what's happening. Dunno if it's the translation or just the style of writing, or maybe I'm just not their target audience.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the new storyline is that they chose to allow it for new players. This resulted in the story being 99% dialogue and cutscenes with a couple of combat and lifeskill events in between. It gets tiring, because it's less like playing a game and more like watching a visual novel. And as a visual novel, the story just isn't good enough.

Doesn't help that you get practically zero choice in the story and your character is mute as always, but that's nothing special as far as MMOs go (GW2 being a nice exception to the rule in that your own character also talks, even if you have again almost zero choice in the story).

So, good effort, but perhaps the choice of making the new story to be accessed with a new character was a clear shot in your own leg. Still, looking forward for them to renew the Balenos questline in a similar way, because at least there they can more naturally weave the dialogue in between bouts of fighting the mobs - something that BDO does better than most of its competition.

I do say I enjoy it and my take is people who spam R are people who would do it not matter if the story wass great or not. Becuse it´s something I see in every mmo from ESO to FFXIV to BDO they skipp every damn dialog and what not becuse they are in such a damn hurry to end game they would not give a flying F if the game had great story or not.

No im not sayin the story in BDO is great but nor is it bad  I seen 100 times worse in books and fan fiction and what not.  I think the new story line we got is the best one of all the ones BDO have and yeah ofcs you will not understan shit when you skipped all the past stories but that´s your own fault and not PA.   Just admit it that you don´t care about it but don´t come here and say that every one things it´s shit. Speak for your self and not on others behalf.
