I like it that PA puts resources in the storytelling methods. Voiceovers are good and the cutscenes were ok too. Problem with the new story was not in the telling, but the story itself. I really think the writers are not doing a very good job of keeping it all together. At least for a westerner, following the storyline is really tedious and takes a lot of effort to keep up with what's happening. Dunno if it's the translation or just the style of writing, or maybe I'm just not their target audience.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the new storyline is that they chose to allow it for new players. This resulted in the story being 99% dialogue and cutscenes with a couple of combat and lifeskill events in between. It gets tiring, because it's less like playing a game and more like watching a visual novel. And as a visual novel, the story just isn't good enough.

Doesn't help that you get practically zero choice in the story and your character is mute as always, but that's nothing special as far as MMOs go (GW2 being a nice exception to the rule in that your own character also talks, even if you have again almost zero choice in the story).

So, good effort, but perhaps the choice of making the new story to be accessed with a new character was a clear shot in your own leg. Still, looking forward for them to renew the Balenos questline in a similar way, because at least there they can more naturally weave the dialogue in between bouts of fighting the mobs - something that BDO does better than most of its competition.

mute character is not really a problem, for example in dragon quest 11 the protagonist doesnt talk

same thing in dark soul and code vein

or the doomslayer

I did my best to read and follow the story, but near the end I was barely skimming the babbling locals and fox.

The parts that involved Jordine were good. Something about him felt impactful. It was nice that the story offered so much lore to the class.

The *epic cutscenes* panning around with epic music completely lost any effect they may have been intended to have because..

You have harvested a potato.

You have mined 13 iron ore.

ect kept popping up in the middle of my screen.

Maybe theres an option to turn that spam off and I just havent found it?

just my 2 cents

Agreed, mute MC is perfectly viable and is an excellent choice for RPGs. There is a lot of discussion surrounding this and there is a good reason why the top selling RPGs have mute MCs.

I haven't really gotten to the new zone yet, been too busy but BDO does at least try to give a story, unlike 99% of the other MMORPGs. I may not care for the delivery of the one-liner approach of BDO (at least pre-this patch) and believe me, I read a lot, it's just BDO has a way to just dissuade my interest with its presentation style.

One liners can be fixed with voice overs but a better approach would be a more organic dialog between the character and character(s) on screen. Take for instance, Guild Wars 2. I haven't played it in a long time but they had hand-drawn graphics with slight movements and a textbox that appeared with voice over. It was a good way to present it. FF14 is a mix between main-story being voiced and side-story being not voiced but both have text box of text with no one-liners.. well, they do have comedy zingers ;)

Elder scrolls is the most immersive MMORPG for story telling I think but some people prefer SWOTR. I'm interested to see what they decided to do in this expansion to "change it up". Will report in a few days if I have anything to say about it lol

I started in the Duvencrane area with my Drakonia on a Season server. I loved the story, was a lot of fun.

The voice acting was great all around. Lando had me laughing more often than not by himself, and the bickering with Jordine was hilarious.

No spoilers here, but the end was great and left a lot of questions to be answered in the future! Look forward to that.

I will take free content any day and, especially in that vein of thought, this was top notch imho.

Funny you should say that, because most players didn't really like the GW2 original story "talking marionettes" style, and that's why they replaced it with most of the dialogue happening in the game engine now, sometimes even right in the middle of combat. It's great, easily the best story presentation style in any MMO, because it feels organic and fluid, and never gets boring.

I'm not taking it too serious and I'm loving it personally. It's even more funny when I accidently skip something because I'm so use to just smashing through the text. The blend of professional voice actors with amature ones, the over the top 3 word names of everything they refrence. I love the fact even the lowly random 1 encounter npcs now have voices. Lets not forget the over dramatic voice actors either.

I mean this whole heartedly and sincere,  I hope they take the time to do this to the rest of the game.  I love that Yaz and the gang now have a voices, i think they found the perfect voice actor for her.  From someone who's played this game since 2018 this has been a treat thus far.

You guys all didn't get the point. It's not just about the story.

The whole new content is absolutely useless, and without any exception everyone wants to leave there as fast as possible.

New expansions should be exciting, rewarding, but for some weird reason PA decides to make it 3-4 times worse than the Elvia spots right outside the beginner village. It's just a stupidly tedious ultra low RNG grind for embers - and they invested like over a year to develop all that?

Now with all that in mind, you're annoyed right from the start, which carries over to have zero interest in that entire area. And PA dares to push players to enjoy that 1% "story" hidden in a dogshit pile of 99% trash.

I seen 100 times worse in books and fan fiction and what not.

P.A. has about 10,000 times the money of those given author communities.  The bar should be much higher

I think the big takeaway is different people have different tastes, and while some people like the story some people just don't care.  The issue is PA has decided that regardless of peoples opinion on the story, they will force you to watch their cutscenes now.  The unskippable cutscenes and long timer on hitting R are a bad addition, as they add nothing to the story for people who like the story, but take away from the experience that people who don't care about the story want.  I play through the storylines not because I want to see the story, but because I need the knowledge from the quests in order to play the game I want to play it better.  Why punish players who want to play differently?
