It's not xenophobia. Korean culture has a long history of being dominated by Chinese culture. Most Asian cultures do, and most of the West doesn't know or care about the differences between them. PA changed the name of Heilang because that is the Chinese name for a mythical beast both cultures share an origin for, but both cultures have different folklore around. Korean players wanted to see their culture represented more in a game that is made by a Korean company. This happened at a time when China is trying to push its weight around more in the region,, and is actively eradicating some cultures. Some are making an effort to disentangle their cultural identities from China so they are seen as unique, and not just a subculture of China.

Tamer comes from LomL, a land based on Korean culture and sort of a love letter to it by the devs. The name change reflects that.

The name change does nothing to you, the players from other regions. It doesn't change the identity of the beast for you, it's function in game. If you want to call it heilang, nobody is stopping you.

I would argue that the demand to change the name back to Heilang despite the cultural and historical reasons for it are ignorant, ill-informed, and deliberately disrespectful to the cultural identity and heritage of both the company and KR players.

All that is absolutely and entirely irrelevent.

It is just a name, it's not an affirmation of them supporting chinese culture or chinese actions in the past anymore than my last name supports nazi germany because it's germanic and my lineage in part came from there. People need to stop being so sensitive, reading too much into things, and going out of their way to act offended by any and everything. Such a stupid stupid reaction on PA's, and pathetic societal trait as a whole these days. Talk about degredation.

The world is a mixing pot of cultures these days, especially when it comes to language, there is no mutual exclusivity. Goodness, wake up. This sort of rubbish from PA and those childish players that requested the change speaks far louder (and more negatively) about their own character and insecurities than anything else.

You're absolutely wrong though, PA weaponised the name change by giving in to this petty element, only perptuating and bring light to an issue that was otherwise non-existent.

This guy is clearly either Korean or associated with them, of course he prefers Heuklang over Heilang. Speak for yourself. No insecure KR players here, only the calls for the comeback of our glorious Heilang. Obviously never gonna happen, but hey one can bitch like this dude here

Changing the name of one of the game's iconic creatures just because a few Koreans disagree with the Chinese origin of his name is completely nonsensical.

It always has been and always will be Heilang!

Heuklang sucks!

The fact the name was changed almost 8 years later was a bad call. Many main tamer and even those of us who don't have come to love Heilang as is. Sure change the name for the mandatory in KR server but the very least a poll in NA & EU would have been considerate. To change something without thinking about the people who've had HEILANG for almost 8 years is more than inconsiderate. Changing a story/folklore/name years later is wrong. Old habits are hard to break and pointless to force. Just change it back to Heilang. Seems the masses in NA & EU reqeust it.

I mean with LoMS they are trying to push korean culture forward. Changes like that happen and while it is sometimes uncomfortable for old familiar things to change, it is a way of moving forward. If they do it to better promote their own nature folklore I think tamer mains can get over it eventually.

The argument that it is just a name works both ways btw.

You're mistaken. I prefer Heilang. But it's not my culture, so I'm not going to throw an absolute fit over a name change requested by the players whose culture it is. So even while I prefer Heilang, I support the change to Heuklang.

The masses don't give a crap. Many haven't even noticed.

The whole "it's just a name" argument is inherently flawed, as well. Names have power and meaning. Should we have kept the names of schools named after murderers who fought for slavery in the US Civil War? Should we have kept names that degrade or coopt the cultures of Native Americans? Names mean something to people. You probably wouldn't be happy if I ignored your chosen name and called you whatever I wanted.

Now, you can take this argument and say Heilang meant something to a small segment of players here in the US. You'd absolutely be right. But it also meant something else to a group for whom it geld more significance than anyone in the US. And PA agreed with that group, because it meant something to them as well.
