that's what happened and what you are complaining about right now.
you are not supposed to "play" the game afk in the first place. see recent pve changes to prevent afk grinding.

You're conflaiting the idea of dying with the idea of losing items because you died. Imagine if crystals were destroyed if someone randomly killed you while grinding, would be pretty silly wouldn't it.

I'm sorry but lol... This game (or at least lifeskills) is heavily designed around afk and semi-afk activities. I'm not sure which so called "recent pve changes to prevent afk grinding" you're refering to is but you're again conflating completely different concepts. AFK grinding is largely accomplished through the usage of 3rd party tools and/or macros (and "piloting" if you want to get technical). That is outside of the scope of the implemented game. Setting up a character to cook all day is not.

If you are talking about getting killed whole active trading, or getting killed while bartering that is on you for doing it on a level 50+ character. If you are going to do either of those things that is what your level 49 alt is fore.
In particular the part about losing trade items while bartering, this is a necessity to even come close to justifying the massively oppressive nature of the Naval Karma system.
That said. I personally feel that PvP should not be unlocked until level 60+. They should cap the levels at 60.999 until the PvP unlock quest is done. When you do the PvP unlock quest (available from level 49+) then your AP/DP brackets should unlock and be applied to that character. Your name should stay green, you are not able to be targeted by a war target or red player. In fact i'll make that post because it just makes sense.

That is exactly what happens if you are unlucky enough to get lasthittet by a mob.
And there are ways to prevent getting killed while doing afk activities, if you don't use them it's on you.

That is one way around the problem true, but a pretty restrictive one as it requires both that I have an alt that I never level and that I never use my ships cannons.

Nothing about the naval karma system causes the pirate to lose anything they wouldn't have already if they died. The only thing it does is make it inconvienent to dock. They might even still be able to use all the ports on lvl 49's themselves, that one I'm not sure about. That said, the naval karma system itself could use changes as it tends to punish people completely unrelated to piracy for doing stuff like flagging on a boat and punching it. They could do away with the naval karma system completely for all I care about it tbh. The problem here isn't red players or pirates, it's purely the fact other people can directly inflict monitary harm (honestly there's a whole other discussion to be had about crystal breakage and "feeding" that's a bit more nuanced).
Agree, it's stupid that people even need to make lvl 49 alts to avoid these mechanics. Losing barter items, time, ship repair costs and sailors getting sick doesn't make sense anymore. The game has evolved from losing exp ect on player death, this is just a remnant of older systems that haven't caught up.
There would be more people willing to participate in pvp without losses as well.
