That looks amazing !

If I may offer some constructive criticism :

- Composition : center the character and horse head a little more, so add some space to the left and the top. Let them breathe a little.

- Character face : add a little shading, but keep it very light, like the horse head. So it appears less flat and doesn't conflict with the rest of the painting.

- Background image : lower the constrast. Backgrounds usually need a lower constrast than foregrounds, giving the image a sense of space. Also maybe stylize the image, it look too much like a photo, and conflicts with the characters (maybe an oil filter ?). The blur was also the right idea.

Other than that, wonderful work. :)

It will likely come across as self-serving or otherwise disengenous when offering criticism publically in the comments of an artist's contribution post

There are exceptions of course- context/relationship matters (such as if the artist was soliciting advice/feedback, or you guys knew each other, etc.).

Intent matters too, which it is pretty clear to me you don't mean anything disengenous, as the feedback wasn't the sole thing you posted and the pointers are, objectively, sound practices and approaches.

A direct message, to see if they would like to chat and ask if you could provide them feedback or discuss, goes much further in terms of impact and provides the artist the choice and courtesy to agree and engage in discussion - or not to.

as Syriyus said, not everybody is looking for that, and context does matter.

if it is clear the poster/artist is seeking/receptive to feedback or discussion on their post about their art - including critiques and opinions - then fire away if so inclined! you are indeed right in your followup comment about the importance of feedback and criticism for an artist's growth. i would sub out artist and just simply say, "people", because at the end of the day, we artists need to realize that yes indeed, we're people too :"D

above that, though, is courtesy and respect for those whose experience or story that are not known or shared; who knows what a person is going through, at the end of the day. best to play it safe and light, and err on the side of priority to the poster ~
