Magnus quest - Bad game design to make things deliberately painful.

There is absolutely nothing gained from making things deliberately miserable and not fun. The Magnus quest is hell. When I returned to BDO from playing in 2016-2017, one of the things people said was "There is fast travel now, but you have to do a miserable quest first. But its worth it!"

Why make it miserable? The entire point of the whole thing was fully established lore-wise after the first set of ~3 quests. It should have been 100% complete and done right then and there.

PAIN is not a resource that should be required to play a game.

In a game with such absolutely brilliant combat, life skills, pvp, why would you put such an incredible emphasis on something the game does horribly (quests/writing) and do it on something that is effectively required (you'd be a fool to play without the features/reward).

I really want to get more friends playing BDO but it is hard to do so when I know I'm signing them up for miserable things like this that will make them mad at me, and make them just want to quit.

Fast travel is ok, but it's the unified storage that's the game-changer.

Personally, I enjoy the Magnus quest line. I've done in on a few characters already (you only need to do it once, though, don't worry!).  It's a chill change of pace, particularly with the recent nerfs it got.

But to each their own. Rest assured that once you get it done, you'll never need to speak to Wuju again!

That is indeed a relief.

What's sad is I think the CONCEPT is super cool. It is just way too long, too repetitive, and too tedious for such incredibly important buffs/rewards.

Every single step would have a riddle where I totally got the point, and had "solved the pattern" in the first room or first time. But then they made me do it 2-5 more times. A change of pace is fine but when it is gating something so vital, keep it simple/short imho.

Thanks for the reply though. I am glad it is only once! :)

It is a case of to each their own, but the riddles sometimes were too oblique, as you had absolutely no idea what was going on.  Offering some reason behind it and a better purpose would make it better.

The story didn't have much thought put into it.  "Anomolies" could have been better explained, as to what was wrong in each case and why, lore-wise.  Utimately it was just to offer a change of pace, but it could have been much better planned out.  They should have hired an expert puzzle designer.

Magnus quest reward is great - instant Storage movement, teleport between regions.

BUT the quest itself is really bad.. They just created puzzle-missions and build some story around it. It doesn't make much sense and half of those puzzle-missions are terrible! I recommend to finish the quest using youtube-guides.

I'm necromancing this thread because I returned after 5 years and just finished the Magnus questline, and every puzzle was so ass I'm actually mad at it, because the reward is so good but the whole thing is a utter waste of time, the most unfun garbage that I've ever had the misfortune to play. With that said, I'm thankful to the merciful soul at PearlAbyss who decided to make it a family-bound quest.

Yeah I wasn't really a fan of it myself. Was just really tedious. I still haven't finished it actually, lol. I take a LOT of breaks in-between the Magnus quests. Just really havn't had the energy to start them back up again. I think I'm pretty much done, I've unlocked most of the storage and teleports so I should just get back on that character and do it. Thank God you only have to do it once! So I guess, just take breaks in-between the quests and come back to it when you're fresh, well-rested, and ready to go. There's no rush and the benefits outweigh the bad. Take your time.

Magnus is one of many questlines or unique content that could have been fun had it been better implemented. That seems to be the way of this game, sadly. As it is, content like Magnus and Land of Morning Light feels very far removed from the rest of the game. It can be a bit jarring especially if you're new. The shift in tone and story-telling is off-putting. As are the wacky characters in those areas. So buckle up, lol.
