No EXP obtained for Totem of the Sea when fish is caught but discarded

No EXP is gained for an equipped Totem of the Sea when fish is caught but it was discarded (either manual or through the setting when auto-fishing).
The bug hinders leveling the totem by a significant amount.
This has been an issue since the item has been introduced and it is 100% reproducible.
Expected:
Totem gains EXP whenever a fish is caught.
Actual:
No EXP is obtained when fish was (auto-)discarded.
Prerequisites:
P1: Equip your Fishing Boat with any Totem of the Sea (EXP below 150%)
P2: Stand on your Fishing Boat
Steps to reproduce (A):
1. Cast Fishing Rod
2. Select a grade (e.g. "Yellow") in the auto-discard menu
3. Catch atleast one fish of the selected grade or below via auto-fishing
No EXP was obtained
Steps to Reproduce (B):
1. Cast Fishing Rod
2. Catch atleast 1 fish (white/green/blue/yellow grade) opening the ITEM LIST menu
3. Discard the fish (top right X button)
No EXP was obtained
