Short answer it doesn't work.
Long answer, it only counts the silver on your current character in your current storage. If you have 500 billion in your central market and no silver in your inventor or storage and there is only 1 other player online and that player has 1 silver in his inventory and none in his central market, he gets the #1, you get the #2.

I have over 3 billion silver which I thought was a good amount but I'm still ranked E. Is every player just super rich or are the rankings broken?
I know the rankings are just who's online on your server so that's why I'm confused. I know I probably don't have a lot compared to every single player but always being ranked E is weird.
I don't know what you're doing wrong, but I was ranked #11 the other night with only 2.1 billion silver on my *favorite (**hint:...b/c it's less crowded) server. ...so yes, depends on where it's in your city bank storage, or in the MarketPlace Warehouse. And due to that fact, it's probably the least impressive ranking you could be high in other than Gardening

Wealth = amount of raw silver on your account, including all characters and storages, doesn't count marketplace and black spirit safe.
