Not to say, however, that certain things couldn't be adjusted to fit the Western audience more.  We are their top revenue region, so from a fiscal standpoint, keeping their most profitable region happy should be among their top priorities (IMO).  Personally, I'd rather not see huge changes, like full PVE server in BDO, but smaller things to help the PvP-averse could be implemented.  Karma was introduced for this very reason, and for those averse to OWPVP, I'm sure there are things that could help their experience if it really is as bad as some people make it out to be.  I play BDO for the fact it's quite different than other popular MMO's, like you and many others here. but is not to say that some things couldn't be improved.

IE:  As a contribution to the side of players who are new and not yet ready for PVP, what would you think of this?  Just trying to gain some perspective, just an idea that popped into my head today.

 

- If a player is wearing full Narchillian Gear, they cannot be attacked via PvP.  Has to be full Narc Gear, however, since it would prevent the exploitation / unfair use of it (IE: wear one Narc piece to grind Orc Camp to prevent being attacked).  This way, new players who will be donning Narchillian Gear, can rest assured they can settle in this game until they're ready to don Boss Gear and join the rest of us.

I would say Narchillia and Capotia or quest accessories.  I would imagine someone wearing Full Pen accessories and Narchillia could do decent at Orcs and other Elvia spots.

Well now, there's the real kicker isn't it? This is not a western game. This is a Korean game.

Why should they have to completely change their game just to fit some westerners ideals?

You choose to play a KR game, so you should be the one to adapt.

 

Yes, they do adapt many aspects to accomodate the western audience, but that by no means they have to, nor should they, abandon their identities and embedded cultural aspects of their gaming culture just because some westerners don't want to adapt.   How about the west adapt eastwards for once and stop trying to change the core nature of a game that you chose to play for what it was?  I sincerely hope PearlAbyss diggs in their heels and stands fast against such "cancels" of a gaming genre and style that has withstood the test of time and endured all the hardships of the gaming industry now for 20 years+, and carry on with their traditions.

 

If I wanted to play a "western" game, there's plenty to choose from; but I don't. I wanted to play an Eastern-made game, and that's one reason I chose BlackDesert.  This anti-open-world-pvp-bandwagon has been going on for 5 years now, and yet,...we still have full-open-pvp, and I hope it stays that way.

TLDR - Stop trying to change the core nature of the game.  If you're afraid of getting PK'd then stay in a "safe" zone.  Likewise, if you don't like the harsh-penalties for pk'ing someone, then don't pk other players.

I agree with you in several points especially the point that we are here to play an Eastern-made game. However, my post wasn't about changing the core mechanics of the game. The biggest reason I play Black Desert is for the relative open-world PVP nature. If I wanted babying mechanics I would not have invested my time.

 

I hope you didn't take away from my post that I was somewhat adverse to PVP; I am not. While I don't enjoy doing it constantly (in fact I sometimes feel bad if I kill someone), I will kill any player that comes into my rotation without communicating anything, and I am a naval pirate as well. I understand the penalties of PVP, and I deal with it.

 

The goal of my post is that I hope instead of adding easily abused systems that can add toxicity and bad manners to the game (which drives players away, and I want more players to enjoy the game with), Pearl Abyss can consider that in the Western market the playerbase acts different than that in the East, and the policing would be better if it was done differently. Perhaps my suggestion for more manual intervention is not the best solution, but I am simply offering an example alternative that isn't just simple solutions such introducing more penalties in the way of the Bounty system.

 

I think in some way we are agreeing with each other. Pearl Abyss should not change their core game to cater to Western audience. At the same time if they are dealing with a Western culture and Western players respond to one another differently. Some of the policing mechanics should be adapted for the vastly different market. I want to keep PVP; it's why I have gear. They are introducing mechanics that a different culture of players may have wanted. They can introduce an entirely difference penalty mechanic to our market.

You can fix Karma really easily: Make Karma and Naval Fame family wide. That way the blame will go on the player that flagged. And while we're at it, make so that farming Karma points takes as long as Naval Fame. Also raise the current cap by say 5-10x

 

You could also have some kind of PVE buff as well (if you get hit by a flagged player) that grants you PVE immunity in that you don't lose exp or crystals for 60/120 seconds, so it doesn't get abused or something. The Jail could be expanded upon as well since it's quite oudated and have it cover the entire map of the game. Perhaps add 2 more jails across the world so it doesn't get that evil.


A bounty system is just another added bonus. So if people wanna go red then their entire account should go red.

We really don't know how the Bounty System is going to play out ...until it plays out.
Sadly, every bounty system that's been in any game has always been ripe with abuse or problems one way or another...
So, yes there will probably be lots of quirks and nuances that need to get hammered out.

 

As far as the Karma System goes, ...speaking traditionally from the KR Genre.... Karma is meant to be harsh on the ones doing the PK'ing...it isn't meant to be rewarding at all.  Open PK is available because its something that exists in the real world, and the harsh penalties of the karma system are meant to reflect the consequences related to those real life similarities. 


Essentially, this game, as well as previous KR mmorpgs, contains embedded idealogies, lessons, philosophies and moralities that you are supposed to learn from, or they hope you learn from.  Such as setting small goals to accomplish larger ones. Focusing one thing until you're really good at it.  Perserverance to achieving your dreams.  Life can sometimes be really lucky, and sometimes suck just as bad.  Fate and Destiny are entertwined but not always set in stone.  The list goes on..its pretty extensive; but for this particular topic you learn "yes, you can murder someone if you choose to, but it comes with very dire consequences".

And yeah yeah, I know, most of our troll squads out there will latch onto that and meme it into the nethervoids, ....but its 100% true story, take it or leave it.

Yes, karma in itself is not meant to be rewarding. Because the reward is elsewhere. They didn't put a regulated owpvp by ideology, they did it because that was the game that wanted to make, a system in which players might be tempted to go outlaws for their own profit. They want conflicts.

If they wanted to tell us that murder comes with dire consequences, they would not have allowed us to happily one sidedly slaughter others for hours through guild wars.

Yes we need fundamental changes:
1. Remove forced pvp (and simple add more arsha channels, 1 for each channels group (Velia, Balenos, etc.)

So basically, if you put some thought in it and chose BDO because you liked its regulated owpvp, you're irrelevant in front of pure pvers and FFA lovers. Mostly the ones who chose a game that did not completely meet their wishes to begin with.

Very logical. I wonder what it is supposed to solve.

Wouldn't work, You can park an alt in Pila Ku and just farm it all back in an hour.  Family wide Karma would be beyond stupid.

Exactly, as usual, it will penalize those who are not ready for it, while those who really want to excessively use it while barely be bothered. Sounds illogical.
